Haiti - Politic : The Senators divided, the ratification of Laurent Lamothe in uncertainty

The special commission responsible for verifying the record of Prime Minister-designate, Laurent Lamothe, should submit today April 10, its report to the Senate Assembly.

Originally scheduled for Tuesday April 3, Simon Dieuseul Desras, the Senate President, reported that colleagues had hoped that the meeting postponed, be held on Thursday, in the midst of Easter "There was a lot of pressure so that I organizes the session Thursday, but I did not, although the report was handed to me the day before," explaining his decision by the absence of several senators in travel and others absent for various reasons.

According to the Senator Steven Benoît, Member of the Commission on the nationality of members of the Executive, the second preliminary report of the Commission will be presented this afternoon in the Senate, stating that the Commission had identified "disturbing facts" in the passports of Mr. Lamothe and hopes that the ratification meeting of Prime Minister-designate, be held after the presentation of this second report.

The report on the Prime Minister-designate, who has not been made public, divides the senators (3 Senators Jean Francky Exius, Jean Baptiste Bien-Aimé and Jean William Jeanty did not sign it]. Kelly Bastien, deplores the serious omissions in this report and its contents remains an unknown factor on the orientation of vote of Senators "It is true that Mr. Lamothe has many supporters in the Senate, the vote has not yet been acquired," noted the President of the Senate.

"...I can tell you that there are trends that have been expressed publicly, of trends that are in favor or that are against [...] at the time as I speak [Monday] the Senate has several majorities in it. There is a group of 17 senators who gathered around a document, which is strategic for me, that will determine the vote that will come, this document thinks the country [primarily]... But within this group, you have senators who do not see the problem globally, who think that there are immediate things, if they have satisfaction, they have no problems...

[...] Among the 13 other senators, there are many undecided... [...] I think that the Prime Minister-designate, in the majority that it will rally to its cause, must ensure that there are people who say YES I will vote for him, who have the courage to raise the arm and say : I vote YES. He must ensure that they are able to defend his case for 30 minutes, an hour...

How many of them who give the guarantee [they will vote for] are people who are constant ? Who will be the Senate really ? How many of them are going to abstain, because they do not vote in front of cameras...? There will be all that at the meeting... Today, there are variables that are uncontrollable [...] the Senate is divided on the issue of choice of the Prime Minister [nationality and residence] especially there is a crisis of trust between the Executive and the Legislative power..."

For his part Camille Leblanc, former Minister of Justice calls on parliamentarians to be consistent in their actions, noting that too often the political negotiations are taking over the technical aspect in the study of records. However, he believes that compliance with the eligibility criteria and the ability of Laurent Lamothe to lead the country, are the main points that should justify an affirmative vote of the senators.
