Haiti - Justice : The mobile phone company Haïtel owes nearly $40MM to the State

The mobile phone company Haïtel owes to the Haitian State one billion six hundred million gourdes [± 38 million U.S. dollars] in taxes for the period 2006-2009.

In order to preserve its debts, the General Tax Directorate (DGI) has assigned Thursday, March 29, 2012, the company Haïtel before the judge of the Court of First Instance of Port-au-Prince, Me Raymond Jean-Michel. The DGI has requested the sequestration of the company. The Judge Jean-Michel, after hearing both parties, ordered the filing of documents and will issue its order within the time prescribed by the law.

Recall that the sequestration of a company does not lead to its closure, and allows to continue the operations of the latter while ensuring the protection of the interests of all parties, among others in this case: the Haitian state for the recovery of its debts, but also the shareholders and employees which according to the information, did not receive any salary for 6 months...
