Haiti - Security : The Minustah has not accomplished its mission at 100%

Yesterday at the weekly press briefing of the UN Mission for Stabilization in Haiti (Minustah), the Major General Eduardo Luiz Pereira Ramos, outgoing Force Commander, declared about the upsurge in insecurity in the country in recent weeks, that he did not feel that the Minustah has accomplished its mission.

"Of course not. We’re still doing our job. We have done a lot, but much remains to be done in the future to improve the situation. I agree with you, it's not the best scenario when you speak about security, but we're doing our best, 24 hours a day, to improve. Therefore, I can't say we have accomplished 100% our mission" declared the outgoing Commander of the Military Force of the Minustah.

"...during the last year, over 2,000 joint patrols were conducted daily in 6 of the 10 regions of the country. The military component also provided security 24/7 in the six largest IDP centers, the most at risk, and conducted daily patrols in 23 other camps. These patrols are important to ensure a safe and secure environment. We also conducted two major joint operations [Phoenix and Hope] of security that led to the improvement of the coordination of joint operations with the UNPOL / PNH, reduced gang violence in areas where we conducted these operations, and permits the integration of the concept of integrated planning of operations of the PNH, which helped to strengthen their ability to work independently..." stated Major Pereira.
