Awareness-raising day for first-time voters in Haiti

On Friday, November 6, 2026, at the Karibe Hotel, the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) participated in an awareness-raising event for first-time voters, organized by the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) under the theme : "First-time voters : understanding the electoral process and its stakeholders."

The initiative aimed to improve young people's understanding of the electoral process while encouraging their participation with a particular focus on young women—in the country’s democratic life.

In his remarks, Peterson Pierre-Louis, President of the CEP, noted that reaching the age of 18 is a significant milestone in a citizen's life, as it opens the door to exercising the right to vote. He encouraged young people to take an active role in democratic life by making free and informed choices, unencumbered by any form of pressure or transactional politics.

He specifically drew the participants' attention to the importance of registering on the electoral roll, key dates in the electoral calendar, and the various ways to engage in the electoral process.

Wilfince Mombrun, Director General at the Ministry of Youth, highlighted the many challenges facing Haitian youth. He pointed out that, beyond security-related issues, the participation of young people and first-time voters in particular, is hindered by structural obstacles, most notably a lack of knowledge and information regarding the electoral process.

For her part, Éveline Bien-Aimé François, representing the Ministry on the Status of Women, emphasized the need to encourage young people, especially young women, to get involved in political and democratic life. She also underscored the importance of continuing outreach efforts to promote the registration of young people on the electoral roll. The day also featured a forum for discussion and debate, facilitated by experienced and qualified young women. The conversations focused on the challenges and barriers surrounding the participation of young people, particularly young women, in political affairs and public life.

Furthermore, the CEP organized a simulation of the voter registration and voting process. The Director of the Electoral Registry, Jean Marie Rémy, introduced mobile registration as a new development in voter registration mechanisms, noting that its implementation is currently underway.
