Haiti - FLASH : Major flooding, casualties, damage, people affected, preliminary report

On, Saturday, a very humid and unstable air mass, stretching from the north of Haiti to the central-western Caribbean Sea, has persisted over the Greater Antilles, triggering intense rainfall across Haiti for the past three days. The downpours have resulted in fatalities and widespread damage. In total, 21 communes have been affected (West : 3; South : 4; Grand'Anse: 6; North-West : 3; and Nippes : 5).

According to a statement issued on October 26, 2026, by the General Directorate of Civil Protection (DGPC), the provisional death toll stands at at least 4 : one person in the South department, two in Nippes, and one in Grand'Anse, where two fishermen are also reported missing. A total of 3,209 families have been affected.

Regarding infrastructure, the Civil Protection agency reports 2,130 flooded homes (Nippes : 1,285; Grand'Anse: 372; South : 300; and West : 173). Additionally, 847 homes have been destroyed, and 219 others have sustained damage.

8 rivers are overflowing in the Nippes department, and 4 in the South department. Flooding has been reported in the town center of Baradères, at the community center in Corail, and at the school in Fond’Icaques; the embankment of the Ravine du Sud has also collapsed.

Roads have been cut off, and communications remain difficult. The road between Jérémie and Chambellan is impassable at Laferme, where a ravine has overflowed its banks.

Significant losses have been recorded in the agricultural sector, with numerous plantations destroyed by overflowing rivers. In Corail, local authorities are currently working to clean up the hospital, which was flooded.

Haiti’s Hydro-Meteorological Unit (UHM), in coordination with the DGPC and the SPGRD, has raised the alert level. The Grand’Anse, Sud, Nippes, Sud-Est, and Ouest departments have been placed under an orange alert, while the Artibonite and Nord-Ouest departments are now under a yellow alert. There is a risk of flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas.

In its situation report, the DGPC indicates that it has mobilized its central and departmental teams and is gradually opening temporary shelters. It also suggests considering the closure of schools and the cancellation of large gatherings. A follow-up report is expected within 24 hours.
