"Did you know that it was George Washington, the central and essential figure of the American Revolution ?

Commander-in-chief of the Continental Army during the War of Independence against the British Crown (1775-1783), he was able to lead his troops to final victory despite a very difficult start and a glaring lack of resources. His exceptional political and military leadership unified the thirteen insurgent colonies.

After signing the Treaty of Paris guaranteeing independence, he chaired the Philadelphia Convention which drafted the Constitution of the United States in 1787. In 1789, he logically became the very first president of the new republic. His refusal to run for a third term established a fundamental democratic tradition.

Washington remains today one of the most celebrated Founding Fathers, embodying the birth of the American nation and the historic transition from an oppressed colony to a modern sovereign and federal state.
