To ensure the quality of improved rice seeds, the Taiwan Technical Mission in Haiti (TTM) is collaborating with farmers in the Artibonite region to rogue out off-type plants during this year's second rice-growing season.
Agronomy experts and project technicians have been mobilized to conduct thorough inspections of the seed plots. Weeds and plants belonging to different varieties are carefully identified and removed.
This operation demands great rigor and attention to detail. Even if there is any doubt regarding a plant's identity, any plant displaying characteristics that differ from the target variety must be removed to minimize the risk of varietal mixing and to preserve seed purity.
