Haiti - FLASH : Nearly a hundred Haitians expelled from the USA have lived through hell

On Thursday, September 10, 2026, Haitian authorities tasked with receiving 71 Haitians, including children, who had been deported from the United States, faced a chaotic situation when the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) charter flight, which was supposed to proceed as planned, was disrupted.

Global X charter flight 6122 departed Alexandria, Louisiana, bound for South Florida at 7:34 a.m.; its arrival in Cap-Haitien (Hugo Chávez International Airport) was initially scheduled for 12:22 p.m.

However, after several hours of unexplained delays, the plane finally took off from Opa-locka airport at 5:10 PM and landed in Haiti nearly seven hours late, at 7:05 PM, after sunset. There were no reception facilities in place, in flagrant violation of the 1999 memorandum of understanding, and the arrival occurred in torrential rain, well after the Haitian government offices had closed. The deportees had been chained for over 13 hours, not including the flight time.

Furthermore, ICE, disregarding the provisions made by the National Migration Office (ONM), added more Haitians, bringing the total to 98, according to our sources, without informing the ONM beforehand. This sudden increase severely strained the already limited budget of the Haitian authorities, who described the reception process as arduous.

Until now, deportees received approximately $80 upon their return to Haiti to help them get back home. The Haitian National Migration Office (ONM) had planned to increase this amount to $200 per deportee. However, due to the sudden and delayed increase in the number of deportees, the authorities lacked sufficient funds to provide this increased assistance or to cover accommodation costs.

"This is a major problem for us. The cut-off time for receiving a plane is 1:00 or 2:00 PM, as it takes us two to three hours to provide assistance to these migrants. In Haiti, we work from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM,”" stated Jean Négot Bonheur Delva, Director General of the ONM.

Despite the weather conditions, the repatriated individuals received a hot meal and the documents sent by the U.S. authorities. The group included, among others, 15 people who had entered the United States through the humanitarian parole program established by the Biden administration, asylum seekers, a green card holder, and 50 others who had lived in the United States under Temporary Protected Status (TPS). Two young boys were also on board, according to the Haitian government : one, aged 3, a U.S. citizen, and the other, aged 6, who was born in Brazil.

Delva specified that personnel were mobilized and left Hugo Chávez International Airport only after 2:00 a.m., according to a statement later released to the media. "This has a cost," Delva emphasized, also mentioning the expenses related to the buses that had to be requisitioned to transport the people."It’s a problem for us; it’s demoralizing."
