On the night of August 13-14, 1791, at the Lenormand de Mézy plantation in Morne-Rouge, a large gathering took place, where approximately 200 women and men living under the yoke of slavery united to give final instructions and organize the great uprising against the colonial system of exploitation. Under the leadership of Boukman and Cécile Fatiman, they decided to break the silence, confront their situation, and devise strategies to break the chains of slavery. It was there that a commitment to freedom took on its full force : live free or die. This meeting became one of the greatest symbols in the history of the Haitian Revolution. From that day forward, the flame of struggle was ignited, a struggle that, 13 years later, succeeded in overthrowing the colonial system of slavery. Today, MUPANAH honors the memory of all the women and men who rose up for dignity, freedom, and the right to live as human beings. Embassy of Haiti in the Dominican Republic : On the occasion of the 235th anniversary of the Bois-Caïman ceremony, the Haitian Diplomatic Mission in the Dominican Republic pays tribute to this major event in our history. On August 14, 1791, enslaved women and men gathered at Bois-Caïman to unite in the fight for freedom and against slavery. Under Boukman's command, this ceremony marked the beginning of the great revolt that would lead to the victory of Haitian forces in 1803 and the proclamation of Haiti's independence on January 1st, 1804. On this August 14, 2026, we pay tribute to Boukman and to all those who fought and sacrificed their lives to bring about a free and independent nation. Bois-Caïman remains a symbol of freedom, unity, courage, and solidarity. The Haitian Diplomatic Mission invites the Haitian community and friends of Haiti in the Dominican Republic to honor together the memory of this historic event and to preserve the legacy of our ancestors.
