Haiti - Social : Census of the Diaspora, the details

Daniel Supplice, the Minister of Haitians living in the diaspora, during a visit in the Dominican Republic this week, stated that the new Haitian government, wanted to conduct a census of its citizens to ensure their rights, assess their academic level and and their ability of work, to involve them in the reconstruction process according to the needs of the country.

According to Daniel Supplice this initiative also aims to promote the new philosophy of his government on the status of Haitians in Dominican Republic but also in other countries "We want to know how many engineers Haitians living in Miami and to the United States, how many students are in Dominican Republic, the number of doctors and other Haitians living abroad."

Daniel Supplice recalled that the process of documentation of citizens living abroad, is a common practice done by many states, particularly those whose diaspora is important, as is the case of Mexico, El Salvador, Ecuador and Haiti. However, the process of Haiti is unique in the sense, that the Haitian citizens surveyed, aged over 18, will receive a Haitian identity card, a passport or a pass, but also to all those who have never had the necessary papers to obtain such documents...

In Dominican Republic, this census will be held at the Embassy of Haiti and in the Consulates of Haiti.

The Minister Supplice paid a courtesy visit to the Ambassador of Haiti, Fritz Cinéas and to the Head of Missionof the United Nations for Refugees in Dominican Republic, Gonzalo Vargas Llosa, who expressed his satisfaction and his support to this initiative.
