Haiti - FLASH : The US Senate rejects the Democrat Bill to extend TPS

On Wednesday, July 22, 2026, Republican senators in the United States rejected a Democrat bill introduced in the Senate by Senators Ed Markey of Massachusetts and Lisa Blunt Rochester, which sought unanimous consent for the legislation already passed by the House of Representatives. This bill aimed to extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for more than 300,000 Haitians for another three years.

It is worth recalling that in April 2026, the Democrats of the House of Representatives, with the support of some Republicans, had adopted, as part of a bipartisan procedure, the same bill, which was then rejected on July 22 by the Senate.

Republican Senator Eric Schmitt of Missouri (radical right) blocked the attempt to pass this bill, which aimed to protect Haitians from TPS before its scheduled expiration on Friday, July 24. He stated "[...] America is not a refugee camp. This is our home, and when guests become squatters, we don’t delay enforcing the law. We call the sheriff and send them home."

Meanwhile, the Federal Court of Appeals in Washington granted a temporary reprieve to Haitians facing the loss of their Temporary Protected Status (TPS), initially scheduled for Friday, July 24. The U.S. Court of Appeals order stipulates that these protections cannot be revoked before July 27, 2026, the expiration date of the work permits...
