Haiti - Hurricane Season : «Let’s prepare, before it is too late»

Faced with the climatic threats weighing on Haiti, the Government, under the leadership of Prime Minister, Fils-Aimé, as part of preparations for the hurricane season which began on June 1st, several important ministries presented their preparation plans and the actions that they will carry out soon, during a press conference in the premises of the General Directorate of Civil Protection, in Clercine.

This initiative brought together the Ministries of the Interior; of the Environment; Public Works; Public Health; of Economy and Agriculture as well as several other public institutions such as the General Directorate of Civil Protection, the Haiti Hydro-Meteorological Unit, the National Risk and Disaster Management System and the National School Canteens Program.

On the ground, the Ministry of Public Works has already launched a national campaign to clean gullies and rivers across the country before the arrival of the heavy rains. These interventions primarily target the most critical areas in several cities such as Port-au-Prince, Cap-Haitien, Petit-Goâve, Léogâne, Jacmel, Les Cayes and Ouanaminthe. Other drainage works are also underway in the capitals of the ten departments.

By observing the state of the watersheds, where almost all rivers and ravines are degraded, the Ministry recognizes that, faced with this reality and despite all the efforts made, it will be difficult to achieve the "zero flood" objective this year. This is why the population must remain vigilant at all times.

In order to carry out these emergency operations, the Ministry has a fleet of 162 operational heavy equipment distributed throughout the territory, such as trucks, excavators, compactor rollers, graders, bulldozers, loaders and bobcats. At the same time, the directorates and organizations under the supervision of the Ministry, such as the National Directorate of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DINEPA), the Maritime and Navigation Service of Haiti (SEMANAH and the National Telecommunications Council (CONATEL), were ordered to begin implementing their own emergency plans.

The Ministry is also strengthening its presence within Emergency Operations Centers (EOC), both at central and departmental level, to be able to manage information in real time. Finally, an appeal is launched to mayors, coordinators of municipal sections as well as members of the private sector to mobilize workers, materials and all the technical support available in their respective areas. The success of these operations depends on the mobilization of all authorities, financial partners, the media and all citizens.

The Ministry asks the population to show a great spirit of solidarity and to follow with particular attention all the instructions given by the authorities during this period.
