Tribute in Haiti to nurses 13/05/2026 10:58:27
Tuesday May 12, 2026, the Ministry of Public Health (MSPP), through the Nursing Directorate, celebrated International Nurses Day under the theme "Our nurses. Our future. The power of nurses to act saves lives." The ceremony took place in the presence, in particular, of Dr. Bertrand Sinal, Minister of Public Health, Ms. Pedrica Saint Jean, Minister for the Status of Women, the directors general of the MSPP and the National Ambulance Center (CAN), as well as representatives of the Pan American Health Organization / World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), UNICEF and the Panos Institute. In her speech, Carine Reveil Jean Baptiste, Director of Nursing, congratulated all the nurses in the Haitian health system who continually work to improve the quality of care and the well-being of the population. For his part, Gabriel Timothée, the Director General of the Ministry, insisted on the crucial role that nurses play in the proper functioning of the health system, recalling that they are, day and night, at the bedside of patients with professionalism and dedication. The Minister of Health, for his part, recalled that, since he took office, the files of nurses were among his main priorities. He stressed that this desire is already reflected in concrete terms, since almost half of the appointments already published concern nursing staff.
OFATMA : As part of this celebration, the General Directorate of the Office of Workplace Accident, Sickness and Maternity Insurance (OFATMA) paid a "vibrant tribute to all nurses who, every day, work with professionalism, courage and humanity in the service of our policyholders and the Haitian population. Despite the difficulties of the national context, you continue to accomplish your mission with dedication, compassion and a high sense of duty, making your profession much more than a job : a true vocation in the service of life." On this special day, "OFATMA expresses its deep gratitude to all nurses in Haiti for their exemplary commitment and their invaluable contribution to the social and health protection of the country." Minister of the Status of Women : Pedrica Saint Jean, the Minister of Women's Status and Women's Rights salutes with respect and recognition "the courage, dedication and professionalism of Haitian nurses who, every day, stand at the bedside of the population in often difficult conditions. Nurses are an essential force in our healthcare system. They carry out with dignity a fundamental human and social mission : to care for, support, listen and save lives. In hospitals, clinics, maternity wards, remote communities and in emergency situations, their commitment remains a symbol of solidarity and resilience." On this special day, Minister Saint Jean renewed her solidarity with all nurses in the country and thanked them for their invaluable contribution to the health, dignity and well-being of the Haitian people "Honor and Merit to Haitian nurses, guardians of life and human dignity."
