Unlike Étang Saumâtre which is brackish, this lake is fed by underground springs and mountain runoff, making it the largest natural freshwater reservoir in the country.
Its biodiversity is remarkable, sheltering many endemic fish species and serving as a refuge for a wide variety of aquatic birds.
Geographically, it plays a regulatory role for the surrounding ecosystems and represents a crucial fishing resource for local populations. Its protection is a major environmental issue, because it is vulnerable to siltation due to deforestation of the surrounding hills. Knowing this lake allows us to measure the diversity of Haitian aquatic environments.
