The environment at the heart of Haiti's national recovery

On Thursday, April 16, 2026, at the Karibe Convention Center, the Ministry of the Environment (MdE) reached a key milestone by bringing together technical and financial partners. This high-level sectoral meeting aims to strengthen the coordination of interventions in the environmental sector by harmonizing efforts to make the environment a lever for stability and development.

Under the patronage of Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, his Chief of Staff, Axène Joseph, reiterated that environmental action is now inseparable from the government's three priorities : security; the organization of elections; and economic recovery.

Ms. Nicole Boni Kouassi, UN Representative in Haiti, emphasized the interdependence between natural resource management and security stability. She announced the launch of a five-year pilot project focused on crime prevention through the sustainable management of resources.

Valéry Fils-Aimé, the Minister of the Environment, outlined an ambitious roadmap built around four pillars :

Waste Management:

Launch of the Konbit Haiti Zero Waste program;

Ecological Rehabilitation:

Community reforestation and watershed management;

Governance:

Strengthening of institutional frameworks;

Climate Finance:

External cooperation and green entrepreneurship.

"The environment is no longer an option; it is a strategic lever for development," emphasized Minister Fils-Aimé.

The structured dialogue session with technical and financial partners was a central part of the meeting. Representatives from UNESCO, UNICEF, the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the World Bank, the Partnership Initiative Sustainable Land Management (PISLM), and the ambassadors of Taiwan and Japan to Haiti, each presented their strategic priorities, areas of convergence, and opportunities for synergy.

This sectoral roundtable will conclude this Friday, April 17, 2026, with a technical workshop. Experts will focus on translating these guidelines into immediate operational actions, particularly in waste management and soil protection.
