Crisis in Haiti : Meeting of the Dominican National Security and Defense Council

On Sunday, April 5, 2026, Dominican President Luis Abinader convened a meeting of the National Security and Defense Council. For over an hour, he met with top State security officials, including Defense Minister Lieutenant General Carlos Antonio Fernández Onofre, Interior and Police Minister Faride Raful, and National Police Director Major General Andrés Modesto Cruz Cruz. National security was the focus of the discussions, against the backdrop of the deteriorating situation in Haiti.

This meeting took place shortly after the High Command of the Armed Forces of Haiti (FAd’H) announced, effective Monday, April 6, the highest alert level, "Level D" in Haiti (https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-47210-flash-the-armed-forces-of-haiti-onhighest-alert.html), in response to the escalating violence in the country.

During a brief press conference following the meeting, Abinader explained that his government had strengthened surveillance along the border. He mentioned the acquisition of new technological equipment (https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-46892-icihaiti-army-the-dominican-republic-produces-its-own-military-armored-vehicles.html) and assured that the Dominican armed forces were "ready, deployed, and on high alert" to respond to any situation. For now, Dominican authorities have not provided details on the specific measures that might be taken following this meeting. However, the government is likely to announce in the coming hours the strengthening of border security to prevent potential repercussions of the Haitian conflict on Dominican territory.
