Did you know that Sabiha Gökçen is an iconic figure of modern Turkey and a pioneer of global military aviation. Encouraged by her adoptive father, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder of the Republic of Türkiye, she joined the Turkish aviation school then left to improve in the Soviet Union.

In 1937, she became the world's first female combat pilot, participating in active military operations, notably during the Dersim Rebellion.

Throughout her career, she has flown more than 22 different types of aircraft and logged approximately 8,000 flight hours. For Turkey, it symbolizes the emancipation of women and the modernization of the country desired by Atatürk.

Istanbul's second international airport was named after his exploits. Beyond her military accomplishments, she inspired many women across the Muslim world and beyond to engage in technical and military careers previously reserved exclusively for men, breaking age-old taboos.
