Haiti - Oral Health : The Ministry Launches a Call for National Mobilization

On Friday, March 20, 2026, as part of World Oral Health Day, celebrated under the theme "A Healthy Mouth for a Happy Life" the Ministry of Public Health is launching a national mobilization campaign, particularly focused on prevention.

Oral health is a major challenge. In Haiti, the situation is alarming, as more than 6 out of 10 children suffer from tooth decay. Furthermore, a significant portion of the adult population is affected by gum disease, often linked to poor oral hygiene and/or limited access to dental care.

Moreover, there is a correlation between oral diseases and certain chronic non-communicable diseases. This is the case with diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and some cancers, which share risk factors such as a diet high in sugar, smoking, and alcohol consumption. However, some of these diseases are largely preventable when simple and easy behaviors are adopted, including good oral hygiene, a balanced diet low in sugar, and regular checkups with healthcare professionals.

In light of these findings, the Ministry reaffirms its commitment to strengthening prevention and access to quality oral healthcare for all, especially the most vulnerable. It calls on all stakeholders to make oral health a national priority.

The Ministry particularly urges dentists to actively contribute to prevention efforts through education and awareness campaigns, especially among children and at-risk groups, to bring about lasting behavioral change.
