Haiti - Religion : Mgr Pierre-André Dumas, between Pain and Hope for 2026

Mgr Pierre-André Dumas, Bishop of Anse-à-Veau-Miragoâne and Vice-President of the Haitian Episcopal Conference, offers his analysis of Haiti's future from Miami, where he is recovering after surviving an assassination attempt in February 2024, linked to his commitment to peace. https://www.haitilibre.com/article-41764-haiti-actualite-zapping.html

The pain of the Haitian people is palpable and manifests itself in daily insecurity. Bishop Dumas explains that this pain is intrinsically linked to the condition of the Haitian people, who endure the suffering of poverty and violence. However, he emphasizes the remarkable resilience of Haitians, who demonstrate exemplary courage in the face of adversity. This resilience stems from a deep faith rooted in Christ, which allows them to overcome fear and reject the darkness to rebuild their nation.

The Catholic Church's diagnosis of the political crisis in Haiti is unequivocal. Bishop Dumas denounces a failure of governance, caused by the prevalence of partisan interests over the common good, a lack of moral vision and clear leadership, and the territorial control exercised by armed gangs.

The bishop emphasizes that widespread corruption and the disregard for the 1987 Constitution are at the root of the current power vacuum. The Episcopal Conference believes that respect for the constitutional framework is the only way out of the impasse. As the 2026 general and presidential elections approach, Bishop Dumas warns, "Without total security throughout the country, the elections will be neither free nor democratic."

For every citizen to become an agent of peace, the transition must be based on concrete reconciliation and an overhaul of institutions. Christian hope does not exempt us from political action, but guides it toward lasting liberation. The Church is calling for a peaceful transition and national reconciliation so that the 2026 elections can take place in a climate of security and freedom.
