Haiti - 222nd of Vertières : Official ceremony (video)

On Tuesday, November 18, 2025, at the Villa d’Accueil, Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, alongside Laurent Saint Cyr, President pro tempore and Coordinator of the Transition Council, and members of the Council, participated in the official activities organized to commemorate November 18, 1803, the 222nd anniversary of the Battle of Vertières.

In the presence of members of the Government, the diplomatic corps, representatives from across the civil service, as well as the High Command of the Armed Forces of Haiti (FAd’H) and the High Command of the Haitian National Police (PNH), the occasion was used to pay tribute to the heroes and heroines who, in 1803, paved the way for the freedom, dignity, and sovereignty of the Haitian people.

Shortly before the ceremony, a floral tribute was laid at the Museum of the Haitian National Pantheon (MUPANAH) in the Champ de Mars. With this gesture, the highest authorities of the State wished to pay homage to our ancestors who had fought so hard to bequeath this land to us.

In a national context marked by economic, social, security, and humanitarian challenges, the Prime Minister and the President of the Transitional Presidential Council (CPT) recalled the historical significance of Vertières : a moment when unity, courage, and determination enabled the country to overcome the deepest adversity. They emphasized that this legacy remains an essential moral compass for the nation and a source of inspiration for strengthening our institutions.

The Prime Minister also highlighted his efforts to modernize and strengthen the Armed Forces of Haiti (FAd’H) in order to guarantee the country’s security, protect its people, and support national stability. These initiatives are part of a vision of lasting peace and restored sovereignty for Haiti.

For his part, Laurent Saint-Cyr paid tribute to the ancestors who fought at the Battle of Vertières to break the chains of domination and make Haiti the first independent Black Republic.

"Today, the enemy of the Nation has changed its face. The system that seeks to dehumanize us is now the armed men who manipulate us and the vast transnational criminal network that seeks to destabilize the country in order to establish a state founded on violence and armed force and subject the people to immense suffering. The fight against the gangs to regain control of the territory is the new battle that the Police and the Army are waging today so that they can play a leading role in elections, stability, and progress," declared Saint-Cyr. With this in mind, the State will continue to strengthen the Army and the Police to win this battle.

The CPT Coordinator took the opportunity to encourage all stakeholders in national life to participate in the electoral process.

President Saint-Cyr recalled the vision of our ancestors, who did not fight for personal glory, but to build a free nation. He emphasized that it is by coming together, engaging in dialogue, and uniting our efforts to find solutions, focusing on what is essential today: security, political dialogue, elections, and stability, that we can honor the memory of Vertière and the great sacrifices made by our ancestors.
