Haiti - Health : Haiti and the Dominican Republic united for prevention

Public health officials from Haiti and the Dominican Republic met in the border area of Dajabón to strengthen epidemiological surveillance and coordinate bilateral efforts to protect the health of the populations of both countries.

During the meeting, officials from both delegations agreed on the need to maintain close communication, particularly regarding the regional cholera alert in Haiti and other respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses.

The Haitian delegation expressed its willingness to collaborate with Dominican authorities, emphasizing that this alliance marks a promising start for future joint actions at the border. For their part, Dominican authorities confirmed that there are currently no reported cases of cholera in the northern border area, assuring that the situation on Dominican territory remains under control, thanks to ongoing education, environmental sanitation, and hygiene promotion campaigns conducted in communities and educational centers to prevent any outbreaks affecting the border population.

Dominican authorities announced that they will continue to strengthen early warning mechanisms and technical cooperation between the two countries, emphasizing that disease prevention is a shared priority requiring ongoing joint efforts.

Furthermore, the two countries agreed to implement training programs for healthcare personnel at the border, focusing on early disease detection and rapid response to potential outbreaks. These actions include the exchange of real-time epidemiological information and the coordination of vaccination and disinfection campaigns in high-risk areas.

The authorities stressed that this bilateral collaboration also aims to engage the community by promoting hygiene practices and raising awareness about disease prevention. These joint efforts are expected to strengthen the resilience of border populations and significantly reduce the risk of contagion on both sides of the border.
