Haiti - FLASH : A Haitian-Quebecer sentenced in Quebec for terrorism 04/10/2025 09:35:47
On Wednesday, October 1st, the Quebec Superior Court sentenced Gérald Nicolas, a Canadian of Haitian origin, to five years in prison for leaving Canada to facilitate terrorist activity in Haiti and for facilitating the carrying out of such activities. On March 12, 2025, a jury found him guilty on all counts. In 2020-2021, Mr. Nicolas, through various means, tried to incite an armed revolution aimed at overthrowing the Haitian government of President Jovenel Moïse. He travelled to the Dominican Republic and Haiti to put his plan in motion. Mr. Nicolas tried to obtain firearms for his plan, recruited persons to join his movement, provided funds to persons to assist in his revolutionary plan, and leased land near the border in order to set up a base of operations. Director of Public Prosecutions (PPSC) George Dolhai said "This case concerned a conspiracy aimed at undermining the stability of a foreign government. Anyone prepared to take steps to incite armed conflicts to pursue their objectives, whether in Canada or abroad, will be brought to justice." Learn more about the PPSC : The Public Prosecution Service of Canada (PPSC) is a national organization responsible for prosecuting offences under federal jurisdiction in a manner that is free of any improper influence and that respects the public interest.
