Haiti - FLASH : OAS pessimistic about elections, risk of political vacuum... 25/08/2025 09:19:38
On Saturday, August 23, 2025, Albert Ramdin, Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), warned of the risk of a political vacuum in Haiti if no agreement is reached before the end of the Presidential Transitional Council's (PTC) mandate in February 2026. Asked about the possibility of organizing elections in Haiti on time, Ramdin expressed little optimism. "It's not impossible, but many things will have to happen. The question is also : will these elections comply with international standards ?" He recalled that the CPT took office in April 2024, after the departure of Prime Minister Ariel Henry, with a commitment to organize elections. However, the outlined plans were not implemented due to domestic political influence. "We must discuss with Haitians what will happen after the CPT's mandate ends and elections are held before the end of the year. Otherwise, there will be a political vacuum that could be exploited by gang leaders seeking to seize a leadership role," he warned. Ramdin called on political forces to avoid intrigue and put their egos aside, asserting that this is the only path that will allow for faster and more effective progress towards a democratic and peaceful solution to the crisis. On Wednesday, August 20, 2025, Ramdin presented a roadmap for Haiti aimed at helping restore security, progressing toward political stability, and alleviating its dire humanitarian crisis. https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-45596-haiti-politic-a-$26-billion-roadmap-for-stability-and-peace-in-haiti.html During a videoconference interview with Agence France Presse, Albert Ramdin called for better coordination and increased funding for those who wish to help Haiti and urged them to put aside political intrigue and egos for the good of the Caribbean Nation. Responding to a question about how he intends to convince Haitian stakeholders to participate in this roadmap, Ramdin answered, "We must restore trust and convince the international community to engage in this effort alongside Haitians, both those within the country and those in the diaspora."
