Haiti - CELPAC : Advocacy for gender equality funding

As part of the 16th session of the Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean (CELAC) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPLAC) in Mexico City, Pédrica Saint Jean, Haitian Minister for the Status of Women and Women's Rights, during the fourth day, which focused on the theme of "Financing Gender Equality" made a plea for gender equality, emphasizing that gender equality first requires solid and sustainable financing. Therefore, beyond strategies, she argued, "we must finance its implementation in order to protect women and girls."

Minister Saint Jean presented six of the 12 critical areas chosen by the Haitian government, six areas of national intervention that are broken down into a set of strategic objectives and measures, namely:

• Combating the growing poverty of women;

• Promote equal access to education and training;

• Promote equal access to healthcare and health services;

• Combat violence against women;

• Promote equal access to all forms of productive activity and resources within economic structures and policies;

• Encourage power-sharing and decision-making.

Saint Jean not only presented the critical areas selected by the State, she also highlighted several actions and measures that have been implemented. She emphasized the close collaboration that exists between the Ministry for the Status of Women and the other sectors that ensure the implementation of this policy.

Drawing on the Haitian government's Gender Equality Policy 2014-2034 and the National Action Plan 2014-2020, she indicated that many measures remain blocked due to a lack of resources in a constrained budgetary context. To this end, she called on CELAC, in collaboration with UN Women, to create concrete and sustainable regional mechanisms to finance actions in favor of women's rights in the 33 member states.
