Haiti - Security : Withdrawal of Chilean troops in 2012

Starting from 2012, Chile will gradually withdraw its military contingent, part of the United Nations Mission for Stabilization in Haiti (MINUSTAH) is what has just announced the Chilean Minister of Defense Andres Allamand.

"We proposed to the Council of Defense Latin American that in 2012, we began to withdraw our troops on manner progressive, proportional and coordinated," declare Mr. Allamand.

Since 2004, about 500 Chilean military and police officers were sent to Haiti. Sebastián Piñera Echenique, President of Chile since 2010 had promised to reduce the number of Chilean troops in Haiti. Last May the Chilean Senate approved a governmental petition on the extension of another year of Chilean military presence in Haiti.
