On Friday, July 11, 2025, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) revealed in its latest report that nearly 27,500 people have been displaced in nearly a week due to armed gang attacks in the Centre department, which have occurred since July 3, 2025, in the 2nd communal section of Sarazin, located in the commune of Mirebalais.

These 6,700 families were forced to flee their homes in the attacked area as well as in the neighboring commune of Lascahoba, largely to other communes in the same Centre department, primarily Belladère. Some displaced people headed to the neighboring commune of Cornillon Grand Bois, located in the Ouest department.

According to the IOM, "most of the newly displaced persons found refuge with host families" or "in seven spontaneous sites newly created following these incidents."

In total, more than 1.3 million people have been displaced since gang violence exploded in Haiti.

According to the IOM, the new population movements reflect a continued deterioration of the security situation in the Centre department, which was once a relatively calm area. However, since last March, the department has suffered "armed attacks in the communes of Sauts-d'Eau and Mirebalais, causing massive population displacement."

These displacements come as severe underfunding continues to hamper the response. The 2025 Humanitarian Response Plan for Haiti is the least funded of all global humanitarian plans. More than halfway through the year, less than $75 million has been received, just 8% of the $908 million estimated to be needed.

Among its recommendations, the report calls on the international community to maintain the full operational capacity of the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) so that the office can continue to advise and support the Haitian government in its efforts to strengthen good governance and ensure respect for and promotion of human rights. Strengthening the Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support Mission and fully implementing the arms embargo are also essential to restoring security and the rule of law in Haiti, the IOM states in its report.
