Haiti - Education : Children face collapse of education system and violence 01/07/2025 10:04:40
In Haiti, the number of displaced people is increasing dramatically as children face the collapse of the education system and violence. Urgent action and inclusive solutions are needed in the face of the worsening displacement crisis in Haiti, where more than 1.3 million internally displaced people, including 700,000 children, are facing a worsening humanitarian crisis, according to the latest figures from the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Earlier this year, Plan International shared the results of a needs assessment conducted in the South and Southeast departments of Haiti, where more than 260,000 people displaced by armed violence, mainly from Port-au-Prince, have sought refuge. This assessment highlighted serious violations of children's rights, including widespread sexual violence, the collapse of the education system, and increasing risks of child exploitation and trafficking. Based on surveys, focus groups, and interviews with over 200 internally displaced people (IDPs), the results revealed that over 90% of children were denied their basic right to education due to the ongoing violence and insecurity in the country. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), nearly 1,600 schools in four departments of Haiti (North, West, Center, and Artibonite) remained closed due to ongoing insecurity, and another 166 schools had been forced to relocate in search of safer learning environments (as of the end of April 2025). This represents a sharp increase since January, with 647 additional schools closing and over 80,000 students and 3,000 additional teachers affected in just three months. With only 8.3% of the 2025 Humanitarian Response Plan funded https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-44360-haiti-humanitarian-launch-of-the-2025-response-plan-of-nearly-1-billion-us-dollars.html and as we entered hurricane season on June 1st, the situation in Haiti remains deeply worrying, with a season predicted to be more active than normal https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-45007-haiti-flash-d-3-all-the-forecasts-for-the-2025-hurricane-season.html Since 2022, Plan International has been actively responding to the ongoing crisis, prioritizing child protection and emergency assistance for displaced families. Its current efforts focus on camps for displaced persons in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area and in the Artibonite region, where violence continues to escalate. Plan also supports families fleeing insecurity, as well as host communities, in regions such as Jacmel, Jérémie, and Anse-à-Pitres. Plan International's main interventions consist of providing immediate assistance to vulnerable communities, including the creation of child-friendly spaces and the distribution of hygiene kits and menstrual hygiene products to adolescent girls and young women. Plan also provides counseling and referral services to victims of violence, particularly sexual violence, as well as support services for unaccompanied children, including helping them reunite with their families. In addition, the international NGO provides financial assistance to vulnerable households to help them meet their basic needs, including the purchase of food. In emergency situations, access to income and essential goods is often disrupted, preventing families from meeting their needs.
