Haiti - Security : Update on the Operation Noël 2011
At the weekly press briefing of the Minustah, the spokesman for the mission, Raymond Lamarre gave an update on the Operation Noël 2011 which began November 28 and ends January 7, 2012 which aims to secure, among other, different neighborhoods of the metropolitan area, to allow people to go about their business and also take pleasure in this time of year-end.

"Between November 28 and December 11, 1959 United Nations police officers have supported 1.742 members of the Police Nationale d'Haiti (PNH) have participated in 30 road checkpoints in Port-au-Prince. A total of 10.897 cars, 5.289 trucks and 10.781 motorcycles have been checked. The inspection resulted in the seizure of eight motorcycles, a pistol and the arrest of 18 individuals."

For his part Gary Desrosiers, the deputy spokesman of the National Police of Haiti (PNH) stated that as part of the Operation Noël 2011 "for the month of November up to date we have treated 1.200 cases, nd we made 1.180 arrests across departments [...] at the level of Department of the West from the month of November until now there has been 118 arrests and 62 persons detained for criminal acts, we also recorded 181 victims [...] the police captured 18 escapees, they were returned to the National Penitentiary..."

Mr. Desrosiers also announced that a workforce of 300 additional police officers will be added to the 1000 already mobilized in the metropolitan area.
