Haiti - Education : Financial assistance for Haitian students in Benin

Laurent Lamothe, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Religious Affairs, informs to have adopted all necessary administrative arrangements to send a financial aid to Haitian students who received scholarships from Benin and who are in difficulty for some days, following a delay in the financial support offered by the sister Republic of Benin.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Religious Affairs supports the assistance agreement signed by another Haitian Ministry with the Government of Benin who is committed, as part of full scholarships, to provide all necessary assistance to these young people, looking for a university education on African soil.

The Minister Lamothe, says, by the same occasion, that Benin, after January 12, 2010, had observed three days of national mourning and donated 300 million CFA francs [U.S. $ 600.000] to the Haitian people to bury its dead. The two countries maintain diplomatic relations in the cultural, educational and religious fields. In addition, there exists a pairing at the level of Museum of Ethnology of Porto Novo, Benin and the Bureau of Ethnology of Haiti.

The Chancellor Lamothe thanks his counterpart, the Beninese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean Marie Ehuzu, for having favored access to higher education to the Haitian students in the context of this South-South cooperation. The Minister Lamothe recalls that the first 110 students who have arrived in Benin for a period of 36 months, are supposed according to the Bilateral Agreement, "make higher education in Benin in good conditions."
