In a notye, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the appointment of Ambassador Henry Wooster to lead the U.S. mission to Haiti.

"I am pleased to announce that Ambassador Henry Wooster will serve as Chargé d'Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Haiti. Ambassador Wooster has been tasked with leading a whole-of-government approach to U.S. policy in Haiti. He will work with our partners around the world who provide critical support to Haitian security forces [..]

Ambassador Wooster has a long and distinguished career, including his service at the Embassy in Port-au-Prince. Given his extensive experience in Washington and his proven track record as a leader abroad, he is ideally suited to lead this mission at this critical time."

He will assume his duties on June 12, 2025, replacing Ambassador Dennis B. Hankin, who is retiring after a nearly 40-year career.

Wooster is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, Minister Counselor class. Previously, he served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Paris.

Earlier in his career, he served as Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Iran in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs at the State Department.

He also served as Deputy Chief of Mission in Paris and Amman, Political Counselor in Islamabad, Director for Central Asia at the National Security Council, and Political Counselor to the Joint Special Operations Command.

His most recent position was Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Maghreb and Egypt in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs at the State Department.

His extensive experience in complex diplomatic environments, combining diplomatic expertise and leadership, is seen as an asset in strengthening the U.S. presence and supporting stabilization efforts in Haiti.

In addition to English, he speaks French and Russian and has a working knowledge of Arabic, Persian, and Aramaic.

Wooster holds a Bachelor of Arts from Amherst College and a Master of Arts from Yale University. He served as an officer in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1985 to 2009.
