Haiti - Closing of the NECTAR project : A decisive step for the future of education in Haiti

On Tuesday, May 6, in Pétion-ville, the French Ambassador to Haiti, Antoine Michon, attended the closing ceremony of the New Citizen Education with a Focus on the Future (NECTAR) project. This curriculum reform project has led to a comprehensive overhaul of the 3rd cycle of primary and secondary education programs. Launched in 2019, it was implemented by the Ministry of National Education and funded to the tune of €8 million by the French Development Agency (AFD).

The project notably led to :

• The design of the Curriculum Orientation Framework;

• The production of 164 teaching sequences;

• The piloting of the new programs in 20 pilot schools in the West and Center departments;

• The provision of equipment;

• The training of teaching and administrative staff;

• The implementation of a digital platform;

• The launch of an educational web radio station.

The success of this project relies on the strong partnership between French and Haitian stakeholders. Continuing this fruitful collaboration, the Ambassador reaffirmed France's commitment to supporting educational reforms in Haiti, while emphasizing the importance of sustaining the project's achievements.

This was a unique opportunity for stakeholders to recognize the project's achievements. Yves Roblin, Director General of the Ministry, emphasized that this has helped consolidate efforts to reform Haitian schools and provide the country's youth with a quality education. "NECTAR is a strategic and deeply transformative project for the Haitian education system. Over the past five years, this project has sparked reflection, facilitated action, and produced tools of great administrative and educational utility. [...] The initial objectives were achieved, the planned deliverables were submitted within the agreed deadlines, and we now have a solid foundation for further engagement in educational reform. [...] Education in Haiti faces many challenges, but it is also driven by a deep desire for transformation. The NECTAR project has provided us with a method, tools, and collective energy," concluded Roblin.

From Ambassador Michon's perspective, NECTAR reflects France's commitment to supporting structural reforms in the Haitian education system. "NECTAR is not just another project. This is a major step toward a more equitable, coherent education system, more deeply rooted in the country's cultural, economic, and social realities. [...] This project has laid the foundations for a Haitian school system based on the acquisition of essential skills, openness to the world, sustainability, and civic values, fundamentally placing the student at the center of the education system."
