Haiti - Environment : Fruitful meeting with Taiwan

Moïse Fils Jean Pierre, Minister of the Environment, accompanied by his Advisor Valéry Fils-Aimé, held a working meeting this week with Cheng-Hao Hu, Ambassador of Taiwan (Republic of China), who was accompanied by Jyr-Gen Wu and Hong-Chi Cheng, First and Second Counselors respectively at the Embassy of Taiwan.

The discussions focused on several areas of strategic cooperation, illustrating the shared desire to strengthen environmental and climate action in Haiti.

The discussions discussed prospects for technical and financial partnerships to strengthen the Ministry's institutional capacity through the implementation of key projects, including:

• The establishment of the Designated National Authority for the Clean Development Mechanism (ANDH-CDM), aimed at facilitating access to clean technologies and green financing in key sectors such as energy, industry, construction, transportation, agroforestry, and others;

• Support for gender-responsive local development, an inclusive approach essential for integrating climate issues into development and poverty reduction dynamics;

• Capacity building and ongoing training for Ministry officials, a fundamental lever for improving the performance and impact of environmental interventions nationwide;

• The installation of new solar photovoltaic pumps in the Grand Sud region to sustainably improve access to water in vulnerable communities heavily affected by the effects of climate change.

Taiwan also expressed its support for Haiti's participation in the Bonn Climate Change Conference (SB62), which will be held from June 16 to 26, 2025, in Bonn, Germany. This conference is crucial for the preparatory negotiations for the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), scheduled for November in Brazil. It offers Haiti a valuable opportunity to make its voice heard on global climate issues.

While welcoming the quality of the discussions, Minister Jean Pierre reaffirmed his determination to work to strengthen this bilateral cooperation in order to place the country on the path to climate resilience, ecological transition, and sustainable development.
