Haiti - FLASH : António Guterre will propose to the UN a solution to financially secure the Mission in Haiti

On Wednesday, February 19, 2025, in a speech at the opening of the 48th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) in Bridgetown, Barbados, UN Secretary-General António Guterre denounced the gangs in Haiti that are "inflicting intolerable suffering on a desperate and frightened population" and praised the "invaluable" support provided by CARICOM in the context of this crisis.

Guterres said he would soon report to the Security Council on the situation in Haiti, including proposals on the role the UN can play in supporting stability and security and addressing the root causes of the crisis.

He said he intended to present to the Security Council a proposal where the UN would assume responsibility for the structural and logistical expenses necessary for the operation of the multinational force currently deployed in Haiti and where the force’s salaries would be paid through the existing trust fund. Let us recall that this Kenyan-led Mission is not a UN force.

"If the Council accepts this proposal, we will finally have the conditions for an effective force to defeat the gangs in Haiti and create the conditions for democracy to flourish."
