Haiti - FLASH : Bandits loot and partially set fire to the General Hospital (Video)

On Thursday, February 13, 2025, early in the afternoon, heavily armed individuals from the "Viv ansanm" coalition, according to local residents, partially set fire to one of the buildings of the General Hospital.

Several departments : ophthalmology, orthopedics, operating room, pharmacy and archives were reportedly destroyed by fire, according to Evelyne Frémont, President of the General Hospital Health Workers' Union, the bandits taking everything that had not yet been looted...

Let's recall that the General Hospital, which had been vandalized and looted several times, had been closed in February 2024 due to armed violence. On December 24, 2024, Duckenson Lorthe Bléma, the Minister of Health at the time, had tried to reopen the hospital center, an inauguration that ended in a gang attack that left 4 dead and a dozen injured https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-43943-icihaiti-insecurity-attack-on-general-hospital-death-toll-rises.html

In a note, "The Ministry of Public Health condemns in the strongest terms the arson attack of February 13, 2025 that ravaged the premises of the State University of Haiti Hospital, commonly known as the General Hospital, a reference establishment which, although closed for several months due to insecurity, remains a fundamental pillar of the national health system.

This act of vandalism constitutes an unacceptable attack on the country's health heritage and further jeopardizes access to care for the population. Destroying a health infrastructure is an attack on the fundamental right to life and human dignity.

The Ministry calls on the competent authorities to adopt all necessary measures and reaffirms its commitment to work tirelessly to ensure access to health care for the entire population."
