Haiti - Social : Sonia Pierre passed away

Today, Sonia Pierre, a human rights activist, lawyer, born in 1963 in Dominican Republic of Haitian parents died at the age of 48 of a heart attack, according to the doctor Mario Rondon José Castillo, Sonia Pierre was taken to hospital del Seguro Social in Villa Altagracia at 12h45, and despite the injection of adrenaline she could not be revived. In 2007 she had undergone heart surgery.

Sonia Pierre has for years led a struggle in favor of Haitians in the Dominican Republic, she was a fierce fighter of the anti-Haitianism in Dominican Republic.

In 1976 at the age of 13, she organized a five-day demonstration with workers of a sugar cane bateye, she was then arrested. However, the demonstration attracted enough public attention so that the workers' demands were met.

Sonia Pierre in 1981 founded the "Women's Movement Dominicano-Haitian" (Movimiento de Mujeres Dominico Haitian) (MUDHA), an organization that works to help children of Haitians who live and suffer of discrimination in the country.

In 2005, the lawyer Sonia Pierre asked to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) to rule on the case of two children of Haitian descent who were denied of a dominican birth certificate.

In 2006 she received the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award, for her hard work in defense of fellow Haitians and more generally for her fight for human rights.

In 2007, Sonia Pierre is itself threatened to be deprived of the Dominican nationality.

Her body was transported to the funeral home Apolipsis where dozens of Haitians arrived, most of them mourn the departure of the activist.

Daniel Supplice, the Minister for the Presidency in charge of Haitians living abroad (MHAVE) just declared "the Government expresses its condolences to the families of human rights activist Sonia Pierre died of a heart attack."

The former owner of MHAVE, Edwin Paraison declared "...The Haitian community is in mourning. Peace to her soul !"
