Haiti - Taiwan : Workshop on the production of high-quality rice seeds

As part of joint efforts with Haiti’s Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development (MARNDR), the Taiwan Technical Mission (TTM) to Haiti recently held a workshop in Haiti’s South Department to teach local rice farmers key techniques to produce high-quality rice seeds, which are essential to Haiti’s national food security.

Haiti’s rice industry has seen a sharp decline in recent years due to insecurity and rising costs. As a result, rice growing areas have shrunk and yields have plummeted.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Haiti’s national rice-growing area is 52,000 hectares, below the five-year average of 59,000 hectares. Rice yield per hectare is now estimated at 1.82 metric tons, also below the five-year average of 2 metric tons per hectare.

TTM focused on stabilizing rice seed supplies and improving production in the South Department.

The workshop highlighted the importance of rice seed production and provided farmers with practical techniques and field demonstrations. Despite challenges such as an unstable supply chain and ongoing unrest, TTM hopes the initiative will enable farmers to improve rice production and strengthen food security.

This effort represents Taiwan and Haiti’s long-term commitment to sustainable agriculture, combining resources and knowledge to ensure Haiti’s food security and agricultural growth.
