Friday, December 27, 2024, in an op-ed published in the Miami Herald, Brian A. Nichols, Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, defended the Biden Administration’s foreign policy in Latin America, a few weeks before Donald Trump’s return to power, stating:

"Over the past four years, the United States has used diplomatic tools to build alliances that have helped ensure a peaceful transition in Guatemala, prevent the collapse of Haiti, and advance the democratic aspirations of the Venezuelan people."

Nichols added regarding Haiti, the Biden Administration "empowered Kenya" to lead the security mission deployed to Haiti to fight gangs and is working with other countries to provide resources to address the security and humanitarian crisis in Haiti.

"Although Haiti still has a long way to go to restore security and democratic governance, these efforts have prevented the country from collapsing," he concluded...
