Haiti - FLASH reform : Everything you need to know about the 14 secondary school subjects

On Monday, December 23, 2024, as part of the reform of school programs, Professor Yves Roblin, Director General of the Ministry of National Education, at a press conference, presented and handed over the programs of the 14 subjects for secondary school.

For more than three years, 40 Haitian technicians with the support of some experts from France Éducation Internationale have been mobilized as part of the New Citizen Education Looking to the Future (NECTAR) project to work on these documents in order to adapt them to the framework of the orientation program for the Haitian education system.

Yves Roblin praised the quality of the work which should help the General Education Directory to better establish itself in all schools through the 10 Departmental Directorates of Education (DDE).

Roblin recalled, following the instructions of Minister Augustin Antoine, that the Ministry will make a lot of efforts to gradually facilitate the development of the technological network. In addition to the general education thread, the technology thread will push for a school that takes into account young people aspiring to practice a profession after completing a traditional training.

Joseph Job Maurice, the Coordinator of Education and Quality, stressed the coherence between the elementary and secondary curriculum of the third cycle and recalled that the development of these programs is done according to the pedagogical approach which is based on the strengthening of the skills of students, and this approach is a priority by the orientation of the study programs for the Haitian education system.

The coordinators of the Departmental Directorate of Education encourage all educational agents to seek a better understanding of these secondary programs which propose that teaching, at this level, be done differently.

According to Professor Yves Roblin, the unions, as privileged partners of the ministry, will have a major role to play in helping teachers master these programs.

However, despite his appreciation for the efforts made by the Ministry, trade unionist Josué Mérilien believes that there are imperative conditions for the proper implementation of these programs. He cited among these conditions, the financial means that the Ministry must have to be able to implement them. He believes that the implementation of these programs will not succeed if schools do not have the best conditions for teaching and learning to take place, emphasizing among other things the need for the school canteen to be a reality in all schools in the country.
