Haiti - FLASH : El Salvador approves sending a military contingent to Haiti

After ending the violence of armed gangs in El Salvador with his elite anti-gang battalions in a fight that began in 2022, President Nayib Bukele had proposed in March 2024 to "solve" the crisis of insecurity and violence in Haiti.

Earlier this week, Ernesto Castro, the President of the Legislative Assembly, said that the notice for ratification of the agreement "on the conditions and benefits of the Multinational Mission for Security Support (MMSS) in Haiti" had been ratified by 57 votes out of 60 seats in the congress.

The Salvadoran Government’s objective with this agreement is to strengthen Haiti’s security through international support and thus improve the capacity to respond to the challenges facing this country.

On Wednesday, October 30, the Legislative Assembly of El Salvador officially approved the sending of a military contingent to join the MMSS Haiti. Specifying that the Salvadoran contingent will remain as long as "the multinational mission remains in Haiti".

Let's recall that Haiti and Kenya signed the agreement for the mission in July, and that El Salvador joined it on October 3rd at the headquarters of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington.

Patricia Aguilera Bran, the Legal Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of El Salvador, declared "We want to support them [the Haitians] as much as possible" recalling that 13 other countries have also joined Haiti's call by signing this agreement.
