Haiti - Security : Defense Minister in Washington for high-level meetings

On Monday, October 21, 2024, Jean Marc Berthier Antoine, the Minister of Defense, began a series of high-level meetings in Washington with the Organization of American States (OAS), the Inter-American Defense Board (IADB), and the Inter-American Defense Board (IADB).

Accompanied by Ambassador Gandhi Thomas, Acting Representative of Haiti to the OAS, Minister Antoine met Monday with Ivan C. Marques, Secretary for Multidimensional Security at the OAS. During this meeting, discussions focused on the current situation in Haiti, with a particular focus on its impact in the region.

Ivan C. Marques reaffirmed the OAS's unwavering commitment to supporting Haiti in the fight against insecurity, particularly through the Multinational Security Support Mission (MMSS), and renewed the regional organization's support for stabilization efforts in Haiti.

This series of talks will continue this Tuesday, with a meeting scheduled between the Minister of Defense and the Board of Directors of the Inter-American Defense Board. The discussions will focus on strategies for strengthening the capacities of law enforcement in Haiti, in accordance with OAS General Assembly Resolution 3023 on Haiti.

Minister Antoine reiterates his firm commitment to working with Haiti’s international partners, with the aim of mobilizing the necessary support to strengthen the operational capacities of the Armed Forces of Haiti (FAd’H) aimed at restoring security and peace throughout the national territory.
