Haiti - Security : Gilles Michaud of the UN visited the Mission's base facilities

Last week, Gilles Michaud, Under-Secretary-General (USG) of the United Nations Department of Safety and Security, accompanied by Maria Isabel Salvador, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH), visited the facilities of the Multinational Mission for Security Support (MMSS) base in Haiti.

The delegation was received by Godfrey Otunge, the Kenyan Mission Commander. Michaud visited the Mission hospital and then had a meeting with Otunge to learn about the Mission’s level of preparedness, particularly during this pre-deployment period.

He thanked the Kenyan contingent and the Haitian National Police (PNH) for the rapid gains they have made in the first month they have worked together. He reiterated the commitment of all stakeholders, promising to expedite the delivery of more equipment for the mission.

Otunge expressed his gratitude for the UN support and highlighted Michaud’s visit as a demonstration of commitment. He thanked for the equipment and weapons that were delivered during the pre-deployment period. He noted that the Mission remains firm in supporting the PNH, particularly in capacity building and sharing of skills and knowledge. Otunge observed that the gains made so far have been the result of his close collaboration with Normil Rameau, the Director General of the PNH.
