Haiti - Agriculture : Towards a resumption of mango exports to the USA?

Dennis Hankins, the United States Ambassador to Haiti, and Vernet Joseph, the Minister of Agriculture, met this week to discuss economic growth and agricultural development.

At the end of this meeting, the two men agreed to accelerate efforts to harmonize the objectives of the USA and those of Haiti and to increase efforts to restart exports of Francisque mangoes to the United-States.

Let's remember that in October 2022, the US Department of Agriculture suspended the importation of mangoes from Haiti https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-39523-icihaiti-agriculture-the-francisque-mango-sector-in-danger.html due to the insecurity which makes it impossible for Department of Agriculture inspectors to carry out the pre-clearance inspections which must be carried out in the factories where mangoes are processed. An essential step for the United States since the detection of fruit flies in mangoes from Haiti.

This suspension of mango exports represents in Haiti between 15 and 20 million US dollars in annual losses for players in the mango sector from small producers to transporters, (losses to which are added around 15 million other dollars for exporters).

Let's remember that the mango season in Haiti began the third week of April and is expected to continue until the second week of September
