Haiti - FLASH : Up to 30% of civil servants receive their salaries while being absent
Thursday June 20, 2024, Prime Minister Garry Conille denounced at a press conference the bad governance, the lack of transparency and the corruption which plague public administration and which make the State "totally ineffective". He announced that his Government would implement an anti-corruption strategy aimed at restoring citizen confidence.
"Up to 30% of state personnel receive their salaries while being absent. This is a problem that we need to make immediate decisions to address. We will prohibit the administration from setting up a system to collect funds that are not provided for by law. We are going to clean up the administration payroll. We will work on cleaning up the distribution of debit cards. We will ensure transparency in the decisions that we will adopt," declared Conille after the installation of Marie Chantal Dumay, Minister Delegate to the Prime Minister, responsible specifically for the sanitation of State institutions and the fight against corruption. and impunity.
"We are committed to taking measures as quickly as possible to promote transparency [...]" declared Conille, who promised to do everything possible to restore citizens’ confidence in the government "the population must have the certainty that the State does not tolerate corruption and impunity towards those who squander State funds and property [...] The population must have the feeling that there is a State working in their favor."
"We are committed to acting quickly on transparency. We will follow up [...] to ensure that public opinion participates and understands what we are doing, why we are doing it and how we can give these guarantees."
