Haiti recorded the greatest deterioration of Peace in the region and the second greatest deterioration in the 2023 "Global Peace Index" carried out by the Institute for Economy and Peace

Haiti recorded the second greatest deterioration of Peace, losing 17 places and ranks 129th in the world out of 163 countries analyzed. This is the lowest ranking that Haiti has obtained on the index since its creation in 2008. The Dominican Republic is 83rd and advances 5 places.

The internal security situation in Haiti has deteriorated significantly over the past year, with deteriorating indicators of violent crime, political instability and scale of political terror. Since the assassination of former President Jovenel Moïse, Haiti has entered a crisis of insecurity with criminal gangs controlling more than half the country, forcing thousands of people from their homes.

The scale of Haiti's internal security problem has increased to the point where it is now classified as a purely violent conflict, with the Internal Conflict Intensity Indicator rising to a score of five, the highest score possible. The country has descended into extreme instability, with a variety of organized crime groups controlling much of the country, unleashing violence against civilians and openly fighting security forces.

When it comes to Central America and the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic occupies 5th position, behind Costa Rica, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and Panama. After the Dominican Republic are Cuba, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and Haiti occupies the last position in the region.

Haiti becomes for the first time the least peaceful country in the region.

In Central America and the Caribbean, Haiti is ranked 11th (penultimate) out of 12 countries. Mexico is in last position.
