Haiti - Cinema : The Dominican Global Film Festival in Haiti

For the second time since its inception in 2006, the Dominican Global Film Festival, is transported to Haiti from November 15 to 17, 2011. This year, in a spirit of cultural exchange, the festival premiered in Port-au-Prince, the feature documentary When the drum is beating (Tanbou Frape) of American director Whitney Dow, whose world premiere took place at the Tribeca Film Festival of New York, on April 25, 2011.

Founded in 2006, at the initiative of President Leonel Fernández, the Festival's mission is to provide, in the Dominican Republic, the best cinema from around the world including films with a strong social and political message. The motto of the festival is "Global Issues, personal stories."

When the drum is beating (Tanbou Frape) interweaves the history of Haiti and that exceptionally long of the Septentrional Orchestra. The film made ​​back and forth between past and present: brutality of French colonialism, bloody revolution which gave freedom to Haitians, crushing weight of external debt, U.S. occupation, the advent of the brutal dictatorship of Francois Duvalier, and then the hope created by the arrival in power of Jean-Bertrand Aristide and the despair that followed his fall... to finally stop of the current problems the country faces. In the midst of this history of sound and fury, for over 60 years, the "Orchestre Septentrional" has manages to remain active.

The film, When the drum is beating (Tanbou Frape) will be screened at the Hotel Karibe [on invitation] on Tuesday, Nov. 15, in the presence of the director Whitney Dow, of Nikol Levy, Music Director of the Orchestra and of maestro and Jocelyn Alce "Ti Bas".

Additional sessions free of charge, will be held on the following dates and locations :

- Wednesday, November 16 at the Stade Relax of Peguyville (Petion-ville) at 6:30 pm

- Thursday, November 17, in the Camp Accra of Delmas 32​​, at 6:30 pm. On that day, When the drum is beating, will be followed by the films "Bal Poussière" of Henri Duparc (Ivory Coast) and "La petite vendeuse de soleil" of Djibril Diop Mambety (Senegal).
