Haiti - Politic : First statement of PM Garry Conille

Wednesday May 29, 2024, the Prime Minister of the Transition Garry Conille https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-42432-haiti-flash-garry-conille-unanimously-elected-pm.html thanked the groups of the civil society, political parties and members of the Haitian diaspora who proposed him as a candidate and committed to seeking unity.

"I feel very honored that the Presidential Council has chosen me as the new Prime Minister of Haiti. I would like to thank all the civil society organizations, political parties and members of the diaspora who proposed my name among the other candidates in the process. Together, we will work for a better future for all of our Nation's children," he wrote on "X".

He faces an immense task, as gangs control at least 80% of the capital Port-au-Prince and the country awaits the UN-backed deployment of a multinational force led by Kenya and other countries as part of a Mission to support the Haitian National Police (PNH) in its fight against armed bands.

Conille presented his resignation from his post as UNICEF Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean on Tuesday, the day of his election.

Catherine Russell, the Executive Director of UNICEF in a statement wished Conille "all the best in bringing the children of Haiti the Peace, stability and hope they so need."
