Haiti - Cannes Film Festival : Raoul Peck receives the «Golden Eye» for best documentary

The Golden Eye, which rewards the best documentary at the Cannes Film Festival in all sections, this year awarded two films ex aequo : "Ernest Cole, Lost and Found, photographer" by Haitian filmmaker Raoul Peck and the Egyptian documentary "Les Filles du Nile" by Nada Riyadh and Ayman.

"In Ernest Cole, Lost and Found", Raoul Peck delves into the soul of the famous South African photographer and recounts, through a very personal portrait, the complicit attitude of the Western world in the face of the horrors of the regime of Apartheid.

Ernest Cole was the first to expose the horrors of apartheid to the world. His book "House of Bondage", published in 1967 when he was only 27, led him to go into exile in New York and Europe for the rest of his life, without ever finding his bearings.

Raoul Peck recounts the wanderings of the photographer, his torments as an artist and his daily anger, faced with the silence or complicity of the Western world in the face of the horrors of the Apartheid regime. He also tells how, in 2017, 60,000 negatives of his work were discovered in the safe of a Swedish bank.

In this documentary edited in the form of a thriller, the filmmaker uncovers the soul of the artist, while delving into the complexities of the "concept of race" through his timeless imagery.
