Haiti - FLASH : Haitians could become Beninese…

Haiti - FLASH : Haitians could become Beninese…

Businessman Patrice Talon, President of Benin since April 2016, has advocated an assertive Pan-Africanism since his accession to power and recognizes the need to strengthen ancestral ties whose ancestors were victims of the slave trade and deported from the African continent towards regions such as Guadeloupe, Martinique, Brazil and Haiti, between Afro-descendants and the African continent in general and Benin in particular,

To this end, the Beninese Government is working on a bill. which, if adopted, will make it possible to grant Beninese nationality to Afro-descendants, as reported at the end of the Council of Ministers on May 8. However, this nationality would have restrictions in the sense that the naturalized Beninese beneficiary will neither be able to vote nor hold positions in the public service.

If this project becomes reality, the Haitian who has become Beninese should be able to obtain a Beninese passport (unless restricted, the project is currently being developed) which would allow him to access , in addition to the countries that his Haitian passport allows him, to 15 new countries without prior visa: South Africa, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Cuba, Ecuador, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Central African Republic St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Tunisia. Note that travel to these countries, as with all other countries, is subject to internal regulations regarding the reason and duration of stay.

And 5 additional countries that do not require a visa on departure, but issue one on arrival : Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Nicaragua and St. Lucia.

To be continued...
