Haiti - Insecurity : Alarming level of sexual violence in Haiti

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that humanitarian colleagues in Haiti are warning that the prevalence of sexual gender-based violence has reached an alarming level in the country.

According to a joint report from the Haitian Government and its humanitarian partners published Friday, May 10, 2024, the number of victims of gender-based violence was 5 times higher in March than in January and February combined.

Around 75% of cases concern sexual violence, 94% of victims are girls and women, of whom 78% are displaced people…

The number of cases of gender-based violence committed by members of armed groups represents 72% of reported incidents.

Humanitarian organizations continue to support rape victims; 90% of them received psychosocial support, 25% of whom received medical care within 72 hours of the attack. More than 1,300 dignity kits have been distributed to displaced people living on the sites.

"Despite the growing number of cases of gender-based violence, humanitarian organizations have received only 7% of the funding needed to prevent these cases and support survivors. We urgently need additional resources to strengthen the response and provide legal assistance, medical care, psychosocial support and livelihoods to victims," insists OCHA.
