Haiti - FLASH : 7 countries from Africa, Asia and the Caribbean will support the PNH

Friday April 26, 2024, 7 countries from Africa, Asia and the Caribbean (so far), confirmed to the UN Secretary General their willingness to provide men for the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS), which will be deployed to Haiti to help the Haitian police in their fight against armed gangs.

These countries are Kenya - which offered to lead the mission months ago - Benin and Chad among the Africans; The Bahamas, Jamaica and Barbados among the Caribbean, as well as Bangladesh, and they informed the Secretary-General.

Among the countries mentioned, some such as Chad and Bangladesh have experience of international deployments as peacekeepers in peace missions, although the UN has always made it clear that the mission in the case of Haiti will not be a Peace Mission but a Mission to support the Haitian National Police in the fight against armed gangs.

On the 300 million dollars promised by the United States for the Mission https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-41867-haiti-politic-antony-blinken-announces-an-additional-$100m-for-the-pnh-support-mission.html , Biden recently released 60 million https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-42106-haiti-flash-biden-releases-60-million-usd-for-the-mission-led-by-kenya.html while the promises of international financial contributions are awaited... only a little less than 20 million have already been collected out of 120 million promised https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-41729-haiti-security-at-least-$320m-already-promised-by-the-international-for-the-intervention-mission-in-haiti.html this is why the office of the Spokesperson for the UN Secretary General, once again urged Member States to be more generous and fill the gap to cover all needs.

Let's recall that according to a senior Biden administration official, the latest estimate from the Office of Management and Budget puts the cost of the intervention mission in Haiti between $515 and $600 million over two years https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-41724-haiti-flash-high-level-meeting-on-the-crisis-in-haiti-on-the-sidelines-of-the-g-20.html emphasizing that the precise cost will depend on operational plans final results and needs on the ground.
